The Variogon zoom was marketed in 1967 at the same time the Exakta VX1000 was emerging from the Ihagee factory. Unfortunately, few were sold with the Exakta bayonet. In dire need of a mechanical update to stay on the cutting edge of technology, Exakta had already lost the world market to the likes of the Nikon F.
